CHANDLER, AZ – Traffic in a Downtown Chandler alley will become one-way, northbound only beginning Wednesday, August 31. The alley currently is open to two-way traffic, and runs north/south from Commonwealth Ave. to Boston St. parallel to San Marcos Commons on the Historic Square.

The traffic change is part of a pilot program that the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership (DCCP) is testing to consolidate solid waste services for downtown businesses. One-way traffic will accommodate solid waste trucks in the alley, allowing businesses to receive more frequent pick-ups in a single bin, rather than individual trash bins for each business.

The DCCP will test the consolidated solid waste service for six months and work with downtown businesses to evaluate whether it will work in other areas.

South Arizona Avenue improvements selected as “Project of the Year”

Chandler, Ariz. –  The Arizona Section of the American Public Works
Association (APWA) has recognized the South Arizona Avenue Corridor
Improvement Project as a “Project of the Year”.

The $9.3 million roadway, utility and streetscape project was completed in
November, creating a pedestrian-friendly feel to the City’s core. The
project received the award in the Transportation category for construction
projects costing between $5 million and $25 million.

The award was presented today at the association’s Statewide Congress held
in Phoenix  and recognizes public infrastructure projects that exemplify
excellence in management and administration, including safety performance,
construction techniques, community relations, and environmental
stewardship.

Stretching between Frye Road and Chandler Boulevard, the South Arizona
Avenue Improvements provide greater connectivity, narrower traffic lanes,
wider sidewalks, new traffic signals, street lights, bike lanes, parking
spaces and interesting streetscape and landscape elements.

The project was designed by Tristar Engineering and Management, Inc. The
landscaping and streetscape were designed by J2 Engineering and
Environmental Design, and construction was performed by Achen-Gardner
Construction, LLC.

The Chandler Arts Commission participated in development of public art
pieces that were incorporated into seat walls, art tables and fencing.
Extensive community outreach efforts lead by the City and MakPro Services,
a public relations firm specializing in construction projects, included
40-plus meetings with downtown businesses, stakeholder groups and residents
to obtain input and address concerns.

The South Arizona Avenue Corridor Improvement Project is part of a larger
vision the City has for redevelopment of the City’s central core and
implements the South Arizona Avenue Area Plan and the City Council’s vision
for a ‘new front door’ into the downtown.

Since completion of the improvements, 12 new businesses have made downtown
Chandler their home, bringing 400 new jobs to the community.
